Saxon Solicitors have been using BritCloud, a patriotic cloud provider that emphasises its True Brit credentials, offering a safe, geolocated solution with UK only storage options. And then BritCloud is bought by StoreCore, a company based in India and the UK-only guarantee goes out of the window. So Saxon’s IG and IT team decide to explore their options, which include RemoteInc, a company that has storage facliities around the world, including Eastern Europe and South America. They offer excellent value for money and reassuring guarantees, so they decide to migrate. But now, they need to carry out a transfer risk assessment on the various places that RemoteInc have servers in, and that’s where it gets complicated.

Drawing on the ICO’s guidance and a variety of caselaw, this practical session avoids death by powerpoint and instead gets into the actual work. What is an acceptable risk? Where do you go to get reliable information about the Human Rights situation in a foreign jurisdiction? And is there really a country called Ruritania?
